In Orbit

IN ORBIT

SUNDAY 8 – 10AM

Clive R,  Solar Radio regular these past 20 years, now presents the “In Orbit” show every Sunday morning from 8.00 to 10.00am on Solar Radio, incorporating the very best of classic and classic-styled soul and rhythm & blues, featuring mainly artist birthdays and anniversaries plus the occasional theme-time show.

Clive became interested in soul music in 1962, collecting records and reading fanzines. He ran a fan-club for US soul star Don Covay, and along with other soul fans, formed Soul Music (later ‘Shout’) magazine in 1966 to publish interviews, reviews and discographies. He was editor for 10 years until ‘Shout’ ceased publication then became freelance contributor to Black Echoes weekly newspaper. This led to commissions to write LP sleeve notes, and he also contributed towards The Encyclopaedia Of Rock (Panther Books) and Encyclopaedia Of Black Music (Salamander).More recently he produced CDs of vintage soul reissues, compiling albums and writing CD booklet notes, as label-manager for Shout Records and subsequently as consultant for Fantastic Voyage Records, producing their ‘Soul City’ series.

His radio work began with guest spots with Dave Simmons on BBC Radio London in the 70’s, then in 1981 he began monthly R&B; programmes on pirate JFM, later presenting separate genre weekly shows.  When JFM went off the air in early 1985, Clive joined the Solar team, where he has remained ever since apart from some detours when Solar was not broadcasting. When the Solar application as a legal soul music station failed, Clive joined local FM station RTM Radio, presenting specialist soul and R&B; music programmes as well hosting football and sports phone-in chat shows. When Kiss 100 FM (London) was launched in 1990, he presented an early Sunday morning gospel and vintage soul show, but later went back to RTM (later Millennium FM) hosting a Sunday lunchtime oldies show before those stations folded.
