SOULFUL GROOVES
THURSDAY 10PM – MIDNIGHT
Discovering, Supporting, Showcasing, Promoting New Music
My love of soul music began in the mid to late 1970s with the discovery of radio shows such as Greg Edwards and Mike Allen on London’s Capital Radio, Robbie Vincent on BBC Radio London and the original soul pirate Radio Invicta. Into the early 1980s I discovered more new pirate radio stations as they came to air such as JFM, Horizon Radio, LWR, Solar Radio and Kiss FM and Phil Allen on London’s Capital Radio. In 1982 I decided to start my own pirate radio station and although small it attracted a cult following locally around south east London until in 1985 the DTI raided and confiscated the transmitter. In 1986 I joined Starpoint FM a London based soul pirate radio station until it finally ceased broadcasting in 1991. Starpoint returned legally during the 1990s as the official on site radio station for the Southport soul and dance weekender where I was able once again to present Starpoint shows. In 1998 I joined Solar Radio when an opportunity arose for the station to return to air legally via Sky satellite broadcasting by leasing airtime from the classic rock satellite station EKR. This eventually led to Solar Radio broadcasting 24/7 independently via its own dedicated platforms to this day.
My love of soul music and continuous searching for and collecting of soul records led to DJ / Producer Dave Lee of Z Records approaching me
to compile Volume Two of a new compilation series called “Under The Influence” in 2012.
