Rich Edwards started DJing in 1976 – Growing up listening to Tamla Motown and becoming a huge fan of the Philadelphia International and Salsoul labels I Became a club DJ before I was old enough to attend as a customer !!
Influenced by the Mega Sound systems of legendary DJs Emperor Rosko and Froggy the Rich Edwards Roadshow became much in demand for it’s power and clean loud sound – and the first pair of Technics SL1200s in the local area !!
Rich worked at all the nightclubs in the local area and far beyond including the Roundabout where the Monday Night Jazz-Funk night played host to legendary DJs from the North of England as well as many of the Funk Mafia regular team members …
Playing Jazz-Funk Clubs and All-Dayers throughout the UK including the Blackpool Mecca and The National Funk Day and working live with the bands of the era including The Players Association/Mass Production/ Shakatak / Bobby Thurston/ Sylvester/ Light Of The World/ The Real Thing/ Womack & Womack/Brass Construction and many more.
The Roadshow led to regular supporting appearances for Radio stations in the UK and a summer Season as The Radio Luxembourg Roadshow – working closely with commercial radio stations led to a full time career of over 30 years as presenter/programme director/ specialist show presenter at numerous UK stations including Radio Wyvern/Aston FM/ Big City Radio/Classic Gold/ Classic Hits among others.
Radio shows included ‘The Dance Factory” a groundbreaking dance music radio show with a national reputation. Radio led to an introduction to TV work and include regular supporting artist roles in programmes as diverse as “Only Fool And Horses” – “Eastenders” – “Doctors” – “Teachers” – “Chucklevision” – “Casualty” – “Boon” – “ Skins” and more.
Rich remains active on radio and live DJ gigs – focussing on presenting the internationally acclaimed “SmoothGrooves” Radio Show playing smooth jazz and more – showcasing young undiscovered talent and new music as well as the established stars of the genre from all around the world and reporting to the Smooth Jazz charts in the USA …
I still DJ at Smooth Jazz Festivals around Europe including Mallorca/Italy/Germany/ Portugal playing my passion of “Old Skool Grooves” and sharing live artist interviews on Social Media from the Festivals and closer to home playing at various events in the UK including the regular SmoothGrooves nights at numerous venues.
Still loving the music and humbled to be able to include many of my musical heroes as personal friends. SmoothGrooves continues to spread the word about great music.
