THE SOUL OF INDEPENDENCE

The Soul of Independence ’plays the best ‘modern, independent and new release soul music, the show is booked ended with a new remix and a very recent cover version.
The show predominately supports independent artists but also the established artists that we know and love I like a good vocal and a song that is well produced, and has bounce and tempo.
How did I get here, is probably a good question. Mum and Dad played Nat King Cole when I was a child, I grew into listening to Motown and Stax , when I was old enough to venture out to pubs and clubs my interest grew in the late 70’s early 80’s the halcyon days, especially new releases, and imports, the former still applies today very much, and I hope ‘The Soul of Independence’ will underpin this.
I join, Solar Radio from Global Soul latterly Mi-Soul Connoisseurs, where I spent 5 happy years from 2017 to 2022 presenting the 50Fifty Show [now ‘The Soul of Independence’], and also as stand in presenter for the Global Soul Top 20 chart show.
Prior to that the 50Fifty show, was broadcast on Soul Legends Radio from 2014 to 2017. I have interviewed many artists in the past Will Downing, Kindred the Family Soul, Leee John, and my sadly missed schoolmate Noel McKoy to name but a few and more recently Opolopo , B.Golden and the extremely talented Gavin Holligan.
Why Solar Radio ?, quite simply the breadth of Knowledge of the subject ‘Soul Music’ which comes in many forms, the quality of Presenters/DJ’s, the longevity of the station, and it’s wide ranging musical formats.
I like many independent artists, but also firmly support the heritage of our music Sam Cooke/Marvin/Aretha/Earth, Wind and Fire, and those more recent Raphael Saadiq/Roger Troutman/Tashan/Zo!/Reel People.
The songs ?? too many great ones over as lifetime to mention but Tony Monson’s Top 1000 [Century of Soul] year 2000, and Top 500 of 2019 is a great reference point , I love a chart, playlist data etc.
I was also asked which three Radio Presenters and DJ’s I admired, easy this one Chris Philips, Mikey ‘T’ and now… Steve Johns, like myself, they are all Wimbledon AFC/FC/Old Centrals fans, like myself.
On the outside I am an IT Manager for large multi-national company, I have a partner, and 2 children, a road cyclist ‘LEJOG/Mont Ventoux’, and many other daft challenges, I like to getaway regularly in my Campervan ‘‘VannyJones’.
I also have I have two soppy ‘English Bulldogs’.
Sometimes words aren’t enough , you either feel it or you don’t it’s all very simple.
